Éderson said it himself. The Atalanta midfielder told reporters his move to Manchester United is basically finished, with just a signature left to make it official. That’s about as close to a done deal as you can get without the club posting a video of him holding up a shirt.
The 26-year-old Brazilian made the announcement public, which usually means the medical is either in the books or scheduled and the lawyers are just pushing papers around. Fabrizio Romano, Nicolò Schira, BBC Sport and Sky Sports had all been reporting a full agreement between the clubs for a while. Sky went a step further and said United and Atalanta were in the final stages of formalizing things. But when the player himself confirms it, the transfer rumor tracker types can clock out for the day.
The Fee and the Contract
Here’s what the deal looks like. The base fee is €40.5 million with another €4.5 million in add-ons tied to performance. That puts the total at €45 million, roughly £39 million. Éderson is expected to sign a contract through 2030 with a club option for an extra year. Salary is around €5 million per year, which is fair money for a guy his age who’s been a key piece for a Champions League team.
Atalanta picked him up from Fortaleza via Salernitana in January 2022. He became the engine of Gian Piero Gasperini’s midfield, helping push the club to a Europa League title in 2023-24 and a Champions League spot. That run put him on the radar of every big club in Europe, and United acted on it.
Why United Needed Him
This is a Casemiro replacement. Plain and simple. Casemiro’s decline has been one of the more painful things to watch at Old Trafford over the last two seasons. He’s been a liability in transition and can’t handle pressure anymore. Éderson brings exactly the energy and discipline Michael Carrick’s system needs. Ball-winning, tactical awareness, the kind of nasty midfield presence that United have been missing.
The club sees this as their first real move of the summer and the first statement under Carrick’s permanent tenure. It’s about time they addressed the midfield. Casemiro’s limitations have been obvious at the highest level for a year and a half. At least they identified the right guy to fix it.
The club-to-club agreement was locked earlier this month. Personal terms followed quickly once Atalanta signaled they’d sell at the agreed price. United’s pre-season starts in early July and the expectation is that Éderson walks into the starting lineup as Carrick starts rebuilding.
One question nobody has answered yet: is Éderson the only midfield addition this summer, or are there more coming? United’s transfer window could go a few different ways from here.
