The numbers don’t add up and that’s exactly why this story is worth watching.
Felix Nmecha is open to leaving Borussia Dortmund this summer. That much seems clear according to multiple reports. The 23-year-old midfielder has drawn interest from some of the biggest clubs in Europe — Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United and Liverpool are all in the picture.
But here’s where it gets messy. The price tag.
One report from TEAMtalk says a deal could be done for around €60 million. Bild says Dortmund wants at least €120 million. That’s not a small difference. That’s the difference between a reasonable transfer and a club telling everyone to back off unless you’re bringing stupid money.
Nmecha signed a contract extension through 2030 and there’s no release clause until 2027. So Dortmund holds all the leverage. They don’t have to sell and they know it. But the player reportedly has intermediaries working the market, laying groundwork for a potential summer exit.
This feels like one of those situations where the final number lands somewhere in the middle. Maybe €80 million plus add-ons. Maybe a swap deal involving a player Dortmund actually wants. Nothing is close right now.
At the World Cup, Nmecha is representing Germany and he scored in their 7-1 demolition of Curacao. Not the toughest opponent but you can only beat who’s in front of you. Germany faces Ivory Coast on Saturday and Nmecha should see more minutes.
Why the interest makes sense
Nmecha can play as a box-to-box midfielder or sit deeper and dictate tempo. He’s tall, technically clean and still young enough that his ceiling could be higher than what we’ve seen. Dortmund bought him from Manchester City three years ago and he’s developed into one of the more complete midfielders in the Bundesliga.
For clubs like Manchester United and Liverpool, that profile is exactly what they’re shopping for. Both need midfield depth with different skill sets. Real Madrid and Barcelona are always going to kick tires on any young midfielder with potential resale value.
The question is whether any of them will pay what Dortmund is asking. And whether Nmecha actually pushes for the move hard enough to force the issue.
Right now, it’s a staring contest. Dortmund is comfortable. The player is curious. And half of Europe’s elite clubs are just waiting to see who blinks first.
