Chelsea and Man City Are Seconds Away From Settling the Enzo Maresca Payoff

Manchester City and Chelsea are finally on the verge of putting the Enzo Maresca saga to bed. The two clubs are close to agreeing on a compensation fee that would officially end a messy, months-long dispute over the Italian manager’s exit from Stamford Bridge.

Here is the short version. Chelsea insists Maresca violated his contract by talking to City before he resigned back in January. The Blues claim they have evidence of an illegal approach. City wants Maresca as Pep Guardiola’s successor. Chelsea wants to get paid for losing him midseason. And after a lot of noise, they are almost there.

According to The Guardian, an agreement is now near. Both sides have a strong working relationship, which has helped keep this out of the Premier League’s disciplinary room. Chelsea made it clear they could take the case to the league, but for now they prefer a quiet resolution between the clubs.

Why Chelsea is so fired up about this

Maresca’s departure, in their view, wrecked their season. Chelsea finished 10th in the Premier League. No European football. They had to scramble and pay to hire Liam Rosenior away from Strasbourg just to fill the dugout. The club’s ownership believes Maresca’s head being turned by City contributed directly to the collapse.

You can understand why they want compensation. A 10th-place finish costs a club millions in prize money, ticket revenue, and commercial value. Chelsea also shelled out money to bring in Rosenior, plus whatever they paid to pry Maresca from Leicester the summer before. From their perspective, City poached a guy under contract and left them holding the bill.

City’s position, predictably, is different. They likely argue that Maresca initiated contact or that his resignation was voluntary. But the fact that they are now willing to write a check suggests Chelsea’s evidence is credible enough to worry them.

What happens next

Neither club has confirmed the figures, but the expectation is that a settlement will be announced soon. Chelsea walks away with cash. City gets its man. The Premier League stays out of it.

Maresca will take over a City squad that just won another title under Guardiola, but the transition comes with its own pressure. Replacing Guardiola is the hardest job in English football. And Maresca already has baggage from Stamford Bridge that some players and fans might remember.
