Cam Schlittler walked off the mound Friday night having struck out 13 Cincinnati Reds batters over six scoreless innings. No walks. Four hits. A 5-0 win. And a piece of Yankees history that hadn’t been touched in more than six decades.
The 25-year-old right-hander became the youngest Yankees pitcher since Al Downing in 1964 to fan 13 batters in a game. He’s also the youngest in franchise history to do it without issuing a single walk. That’s the kind of stat line that makes people stop and pay attention, even if Schlittler himself would rather not.
His ERA dropped to 1.71 through 16 starts, which leads the American League and ranks second in all of MLB. His fastball sat at 97.9 mph on average and kept Reds hitters off balance all night. But the numbers only tell part of the story here.
The kid from Massachusetts isn’t buying the hype
When MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch asked him about the outing, Schlittler gave the kind of answer that makes you understand why the Yankees trust him with the ball every fifth day.
“It’s early. I’ve got a lot to work on,” he said. “We’ve got some really good pitchers in this clubhouse. The most I can do is go out there, stay healthy and consistent, and try to win this team some games.”
That’s not coachspeak for the sake of it. The guy clearly means it. And honestly, that mindset matters more now than ever.
Aaron Judge is out with a fractured right rib. New York has gone 10-5 since he landed on the injured list, and guys like Schlittler are a big reason why the rotation has held together through a brutal stretch. The Yankees don’t need him to become the face of the franchise overnight. They just need him to keep doing what he’s doing.
For a 6-foot-8 flamethrower having a breakout 2026 season, Friday night wasn’t a peak. It was a step. The strikeouts got the headlines, but the poise is what made the performance stand out. And as the AL Cy Young conversation starts circling his name, Schlittler seems content to let his fastball do the talking.
