The U.S. men’s national team is picking up steam at the World Cup. And the fans in Seattle are clearly enjoying the ride.
After a 2-0 win over Australia on Friday, the crowd at Lumen Field broke into a full-throated sing-along of John Denver’s ‘Take Me Home, Country Roads.’ Fox Sports caught the moment on camera and it spread fast. The video shows thousands of fans swaying, arms locked, belting out the classic song in the stands. It felt like a party, not just a postgame moment.
The win itself was a big deal. According to ESPN, this marks the first time since 1930 that the U.S. men have won back-to-back matches in a single World Cup. Not bad for a team that came into the tournament with some question marks.
How they did it without Pulisic
Christian Pulisic didn’t play. He sat out with an injury, and head coach Mauricio Pochettino said after the match it was impossible for him to go. “He’s an important player for us, Christian, but it was impossible today,” Pochettino said. “We hope that next game he will be available.”
But the Americans didn’t miss a beat. They controlled the first half and looked sharp against a tough Australian side. Pochettino called it a fantastic game and said his team dominated. Hard to argue when you’re looking at a clean sheet and two goals.
“It was a fantastic game again, very good first half,” Pochettino said. “I think we dominated the game against a very tough team.”
Players thinking big
It’s not just the fans feeling confident. Defender Chris Richards told ESPN that it’s not ridiculous to think this team can win the whole thing. “We want to lift a trophy by the end of this,” he said.
The U.S. now has wins over Paraguay and Australia in Group D. Next up is Turkiye. If they keep playing like this, that ‘Country Roads’ sing-along might turn into a tournament anthem.
