The Trail Blazers are keeping a close eye on Boston’s situation with Jaylen Brown, and league sources say Portland would be ready to pounce if the Celtics decide to make him available. This comes from Sam Amick of The Athletic, who reports the Blazers have been circling star-level talent for a while now.
Portland has already done this dance before. They kicked the tires on Giannis Antetokounmpo around the February trade deadline. That never got anywhere serious, but it tells you what the front office is thinking. They want a real difference-maker, someone to build around or alongside their existing core.
The Blazers just got back to the playoffs for the first time in three years. They went 42-40, grabbed the No. 7 seed in the West, and then got bounced by San Antonio in five games. That’s not bad, but it’s also not good enough for a team that clearly wants to accelerate its timeline under new ownership.
Brown would be exactly that kind of splash. He’s coming off the best season of his career, averaging 28.7 points, 6.9 boards and 5.1 assists while shooting nearly 48 percent from the floor. He played 71 games, stayed healthy, and basically carried Boston to the No. 2 seed in the East while Jayson Tatum missed significant time.

But the season ended ugly for Boston. They blew a 3-1 series lead against Philadelphia in the first round and went home early. That kind of collapse raises questions. Always does. And when you’ve got a max-level player on a team that just disappointed, the rumors start flying.
Brown’s name has come up in hypothetical Antetokounmpo trade chatter too. The logic goes: if Milwaukee ever made Giannis available, would Boston consider packaging Brown in a deal? There’s no indication that’s actually happening, but people around the league keep circling back to it.
Amick also notes that Minnesota has strong interest in Celtics guard Derrick White. So Boston’s supporting cast is getting attention too. The Wolves were another team linked to Giannis earlier this year.
For now, Brown is still in Boston and the Celtics haven’t signaled any desire to move him. But the Blazers are positioned. They’ve got young pieces, draft capital, and a clear hunger for a star. If the Celtics ever decide to pivot, Portland will be calling.
