Anthony Edwards Just Got a New Point Guard. Now the Real Challenge Starts.

The Minnesota Timberwolves just dropped a trade that changes everything about how they play. LaMelo Ball is coming over from Charlotte, and the Wolves are betting their entire future on a backcourt of Ball and Anthony Edwards. ESPN’s Kendrick Perkins called them the best backcourt in the league. That might be a little early, but you can see why people are excited.

Here’s the thing nobody’s talking about. With Ball handling the ball full-time, that means Edwards has to figure out the other side of the floor. Chris Finch, the head coach, made that pretty clear in a report from The Minnesota Star Tribune. The message is basically: you had to carry the offense before, we get that. But now you don’t have to. So go guard somebody.

Finch has apparently noticed something different about Edwards this summer. The guy is communicating more. He’s more locked in. The staff hasn’t seen this level of maturity from him before. Which is good, because they’re apparently thinking about having him guard power forwards at times. That’s a big ask for a guy who’s used to being the show on offense.

Minnesota has been stuck in playoff disappointment for five years now. They’ve never made an NBA Finals. Pairing two young stars in their prime is a real swing, but it’s going to fall apart if Edwards isn’t willing to do the dirty work. Finch acknowledged that the offensive load was unfair before. Now it’s not. So no excuses.

Could LeBron Actually End Up in Minnesota?

This is where it gets weird. LeBron James is about to hit unrestricted free agency, and most people assume he’s either staying in LA or maybe going somewhere like Golden State. But Jon Krawczynski from The Athletic floated a wild idea: what if LeBron signs with the Timberwolves?

Krawczynski’s logic is actually kind of interesting. Minnesota has a gap at the four spot. They’ve got elite defenders and offensive weapons like Ball and Edwards. LeBron wouldn’t have to carry the nightly load the way he does now. And honestly, winning a ring in Minnesota would be a pretty unique way to cap off his legacy. It’s almost definitely not happening, but it’s a conversation starter.

For now, the focus is on Edwards and whether he can be the two-way player the Wolves need. Ball makes the offense better immediately. But defense is where titles are won. And that’s Edwards’s test now.
