Manchester United didn’t waste any time this summer. The club officially announced the signing of midfielder Andrey Santos from Chelsea for £50 million, and reports indicate they’re not done yet.
Santos signed a five-year deal with an option for a sixth, and he made it clear this wasn’t just another transfer for him. He called United “special” and specifically shouted out Michael Carrick as a reason he’s excited to get to work.
“As a midfielder, I am really excited to have the opportunity to learn from Michael Carrick, he is the perfect coach to help me take the next step in my career and push to achieve my dreams,” Santos said. He also mentioned the “amazing environment” at the club and said he can’t wait to fight for trophies with the squad.
What Santos Brings to Old Trafford
Santos originally joined Chelsea in 2023 but never really settled there. He spent time on loan at Vasco da Gama, Nottingham Forest, and Strasbourg before United came calling. The Brazilian is still only 22 years old, which is wild considering he’s already got four years of senior football under his belt across three continents.
Jason Wilcox, United’s director of football, called him an “outstanding midfielder with excellent technical qualities” who can impact both ends of the pitch. Wilcox also noted that despite Santos already having “extensive experience, leadership abilities and proving his talent at the highest level,” he still has “enormous potential to develop further.” That’s a lot of confidence in a guy who never really made it at Chelsea, but United clearly sees something different.
Two More Moves in the Works
United isn’t stopping with Santos. According to multiple reports, the club is close to triggering Youri Tielemans’ £35 million release clause at Aston Villa. The Belgium international is 29 years old and would bring a different kind of experience to the midfield. He’s got Premier League pedigree and doesn’t need time to adjust, which could be important if United wants to compete immediately.
And then there’s the Karl Darlow situation. The goalkeeper is reportedly set to move to Old Trafford after leaving Leeds. Darlow would likely serve as a backup option, but it’s another piece United is trying to lock down before the season gets going.
None of this is officially confirmed beyond Santos yet. But the club’s spending this summer suggests they’re serious about building around Carrick’s vision. Whether Tielemans and Darlow actually finish the paperwork remains to be seen, but the Santos deal alone is a statement. United is moving fast.
