The New York Rangers have been busy this summer. Real busy. They traded for Pavel Dorofeyev and Marcus Pettersson. They shuffled the roster. And now they’ve taken care of their own business with a key defenseman.
Braden Schneider and the Rangers agreed to a one-year contract worth $5.5 million, according to hockey insider Elliotte Friedman. The deal came just before a scheduled arbitration hearing on July 29. That hearing? No longer needed.
Schneider was a restricted free agent. The Rangers could have let the arbitration process play out. Instead, they hammered out a deal that gives the 23-year-old a significant raise over his previous contract. That last one paid him an average of $2.2 million per year. So yeah, this is a big jump.
How Schneider Got Here
Drafted 19th overall in 2020, Schneider didn’t waste much time getting to the NHL. He debuted in the 2021-22 season, playing 43 games. Since then? He’s been a staple on the blue line. In four seasons, he’s missed just three games. That’s durability you don’t see every day.
Through that stretch, he’s racked up 18 goals and 58 assists. Nothing flashy, but steady. The kind of production that coaches trust and fans sometimes take for granted.
The new contract runs through the 2026-27 season. After that, Schneider becomes a restricted free agent again. So his long-term future with the Rangers is still up in the air. But for now, the team has its opening night roster under contract.
Cap space is getting tight. The Rangers have just over $2 million left after signing Schneider. That’s not a lot of wiggle room if they want to make more moves before the season starts.
What’s Next for New York
Next summer could get complicated. Currently, 12 players on the roster are scheduled to hit free agency — either restricted or unrestricted. That’s a lot of uncertainty. The front office might have some tough decisions coming.
But for now, Schneider is locked in. The Rangers have their defense group set. And the arbitration hearing that was looming? It’s off the table.
