Karl Darlow is headed to Manchester United on a free transfer. The 35-year-old goalkeeper turned down a contract offer from Leeds United and has already passed a medical at Old Trafford, according to multiple reports. The Athletic says talks are in the final stages with a few details left to sort out. Sky Sports went a step further and reported personal terms are agreed and the medical is done.
This is a quick pivot for a guy who spent the last three years at Elland Road. Darlow actually won the starting job last season after Lucas Perri fell out of favor, playing the final 17 Premier League games for Leeds. That gave him 38 total appearances in a Leeds shirt. But instead of sticking around for whatever comes next at Leeds — and they offered him a new deal — he’s heading north to be the backup.
What the Manchester United goalkeeper room looks like now
United has been clearing house between the posts. Andre Onana went to Trabzonspor on loan. Altay Bayindir is expected to leave too. Young Radek Vitek, who spent last season at Bristol City, wants out for first-team minutes. That leaves Senne Lammens as the expected starter, with Darlow sliding into the number two spot.
It’s a low-risk add for United. Darlow’s 35, he’s experienced, and he won’t cost a transfer fee. He’s not going to push Lammens for the starting job, but he’s a reliable veteran presence in the room. United needed a body there and they got one.
Leeds has work to do in goal
Leeds isn’t exactly left in a bad spot, but they’ve got some holes to fill. They still have Perri on the roster. They reportedly agreed to a two-year deal with Alex Cairns. And Illan Meslier left for Arsenal on a free transfer. The club has been linked with Japan’s Zion Suzuki, Sweden’s Jacob Widell Zetterstrom, and Manchester City’s James Trafford. So they’re definitely shopping.
Darlow’s decision makes sense from his end. He gets a backup role at a massive club without having to move far. Leeds goes back to the market. Both sides walk away fine.
