The Mateus Fernandes sweepstakes is about to get real. Manchester United is expected to submit its first formal bid for the West Ham midfielder this week, and Tottenham is waiting in the wings ready to top it. That’s the short version.
Fernandes only joined West Ham last summer from Southampton in a deal worth £38 million. Less than a year later, the Hammers are already resigned to losing him. The asking price has more than doubled to £80 million, and the club is openly inviting a bidding war.
According to BBC Sport, Fernandes’ future should become much clearer this week. West Ham’s preseason starts Monday, July 6, and while the club initially didn’t expect Fernandes to report, currently he’s still on the roster and expected to clock in at Rush Green. That soft deadline is the catalyst. Something has to give.
Two Heavyweights, One Midfielder
Manchester United is interested but isn’t willing to match the full £80 million valuation. Tottenham apparently is. Spurs have also reportedly tried to sweeten the deal by offering young winger Mikey Moore on loan, which is a creative twist if true. Fernandes’ agent, Jorge Mendes, has held talks with both clubs. No decision has been made yet, and Fernandes himself is keeping his options open.
United’s own players report for preseason on Thursday, July 9. If things move quickly, Fernandes could be part of that group. But with Tottenham ready to outbid, nothing is guaranteed.
West Ham is in a comfortable spot here. They’ve already made a massive profit on a player who’s been with them for one season. A bidding war only drives the price higher. For United and Spurs, the clock is ticking.
