LeBron James Leaving the Lakers. The Real Question Is About Bronny.

The Los Angeles Lakers are about to look a lot different next season. LeBron James has told the team he won’t be back for the 2026-27 campaign, ending a six-year run that brought one championship and a lot of drama. But here’s the thing nobody’s talking about yet: Bronny James could still be on the roster.

Monday’s deadline came and went, and Bronny’s contract for next season became fully guaranteed. That means the Lakers are on the hook for his salary regardless of what happens with his dad. And according to John Hollinger of The Athletic, keeping Bronny actually gives the Lakers a little more financial flexibility than replacing him with a veteran minimum player. It’s not a huge difference, but in the NBA’s cap math, every dollar matters.

Bronny’s spot is safe for now. That could change later in the summer if the Lakers need to open up a roster slot or make room in a trade. But as of this moment, the youngest James is still a Laker even though the oldest James is not.

What This Means for L.A.’s Offseason

The Lakers are entering one of those pivot moments franchises dread. Without LeBron, they lose the gravity that bent every roster decision toward his timeline. But they also gain something: actual cap flexibility. They’re not locked into win-now mode anymore. They could rebuild, retool, or try to sign another star. Nobody knows which direction Rob Pelinka will go, and frankly the team probably doesn’t know either.

Bronny’s contract isn’t the kind of deal that blocks anything. It’s a small number on a team that suddenly has a lot of moving parts. But it’s also a reminder that the Lakers are now a team without LeBron James for the first time since 2018. That changes everything about how they approach free agency, how they value their draft picks, and how they manage their cap sheet.

LeBron’s next stop isn’t confirmed yet either. He’s told the Lakers he’s moving on but hasn’t publicly announced a destination. The rumor mill is already spinning, and it’ll only get louder as July approaches. For now, the Lakers have to figure out who they are without him. And weirdly enough, Bronny James is part of that equation.

Stay tuned. This one’s going to be messy before it gets clear.
