Wayne Rooney wants Harry Kane to finish what he started. And by that, the Manchester United legend means come back to England, chase down Alan Shearer’s Premier League scoring record, and drag United back to the top.
Kane is 32 years old. He’s got 146 goals in 147 games for Bayern Munich. He’s won back-to-back Bundesliga titles. And according to multiple reports, Barcelona has been poking around to see if he might be available. But Rooney went on his BBC podcast and made the case that Spain isn’t the answer. Neither is staying in Germany. The answer, in his mind, is Old Trafford.
“If Harry Kane’s not going to stay at Bayern Munich then I’d love him at Manchester United,” Rooney said. “If he’s listening, ‘Harry, you’ve got Alan Shearer’s record there… help get Manchester United back!’”
It’s a direct pitch. And Rooney didn’t stop there.
He pointed out that Kane has already won domestic titles in Germany. He could go to Barcelona and win La Liga. But Rooney thinks that won’t satisfy the deeper competitive drive. “Deep down he wants to win the Premier League,” Rooney said. “Imagine he comes to Manchester United and he’s the one to drive that, to get Manchester United back to winning the league.”
United’s interest in Kane isn’t new. They chased him as far back as 2023 before bailing and signing Rasmus Hojlund instead. That decision looked questionable then and looks worse now given Kane’s ridiculous production in Munich. But Kane signed a contract with Bayern through 2027, and David Ornstein at The Athletic recently reported that an extension is still the most likely outcome. So this might be more wishful thinking than a realistic transfer saga.
Still, Rooney sees something bigger. He also tipped Kane to be England’s deciding factor if the Three Lions finally win a World Cup this summer in North America. That’s a lot to put on one player, but Kane has carried that weight before.
The real question is whether Kane would actually want to walk into a rebuilding project at 32 when he could stroll into Barcelona and compete for trophies immediately. Rooney’s argument is basically legacy over convenience. Shearer’s record lives in the Premier League. United’s revival needs a face. And Rooney clearly believes Kane should be that face.
Whether United’s front office feels the same way is another story. But Rooney said his piece. And he said it loud enough that Kane probably heard it.
