Tottenham just pulled off a transfer that changes how you look at this summer. They beat Manchester United to the signing of Mateus Fernandes, the 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder, and they paid £85 million to do it. That’s a club record. By a lot.

The previous record was the £65 million they spent on Dominic Solanke back in 2024. Fernandes clears that by £20 million, which is the kind of gap that makes you stop and pay attention. Both Spurs and United had made him their priority target this summer. His agent, Jorge Mendes, worked both sides. And in the end, Tottenham simply had more money to throw at the deal.

How Spurs Got It Done

According to Standard Sport, the guaranteed fee is £85 million. No add-ons, no complicated structure. Just a straight-up record check. United’s finances couldn’t match what Spurs offered, both in transfer fee and in player salary. Fernandes was willing to join either club, but the money made the decision for him.

This isn’t a one-off either. Spurs are spending like a team that thinks it’s close to something. Fernandes will be their fifth signing of the window, joining Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, Jan Paul van Hecke, and Martin Dubravka. That’s a lot of new faces. Manager Roberto De Zerbi is clearly overhauling the midfield, and Fernandes is the centerpiece of that plan.

There’s also Sandro Tonali. Newcastle wants close to £100 million for him, which would smash the Fernandes record before it even settles. Spurs have already agreed personal terms with Tonali on a six-year deal, and they’ve had a first bid rejected. So the spending might not be done yet.

What This Means for Manchester United

United lost out on their No. 1 target. That’s a real problem for their summer plans. They’ll have to pivot to other midfield options, and the options available at this point are either more expensive or less talented. It’s a tough spot. Fernandes was supposed to be the guy. Now they’re scrambling.

For Spurs, this is two summers in a row they’ve poached a star from a rival. Last year it was Mohamed Kudus from West Ham for about £60 million. Now it’s Fernandes from under United’s nose. There’s a pattern here, and it’s not subtle.

Fernandes is expected to be in north London in time for preseason. West Ham players return to training next week, and Spurs want the deal wrapped up by then. That’s fast work. And it sends a message: Tottenham is not messing around.
