Portland Trades for Ja Morant, Not Jaylen Brown. Here’s What That Means.

Portland Trades for Ja Morant, Not Jaylen Brown. Here’s What That Means.

For a minute there, it looked like the Trail Blazers might be building something absurd. After swinging a trade for Ja Morant, the internet started buzzing about a backcourt pairing that would have made NBA 2K blush: Morant and Jaylen Brown. But according to ESPN’s Shams Charania, that fantasy is dead in the water.

Appearing on SportsCenter, Charania shut down the Brown-to-Portland talk pretty directly. He said the Blazers’ big move this summer is the Morant deal, not step one of a larger shopping spree.

“This was their big move. As of right now, my understanding is they’re not involved with Jaylen Brown. They made attempts with Giannis (Antetokounmpo). Obviously, didn’t land him,” Charania said.

The Morant trade sent Jerami Grant and Kris Murray to Memphis. That leaves Portland with a backcourt that’s already loaded: Damian Lillard, Jrue Holiday, Scoot Henderson and now Morant. Adding Brown would have created maybe the best guard rotation in the league, but also a salary cap nightmare and a logjam nobody knows how to untangle.

The Brown Market Is Still Alive. Just Not in Portland.

Brown’s name has been floating around trade rumors all offseason. He’s a four-time All-Star and just won Finals MVP. Teams call. That’s how it works. But multiple reports — including one from ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel earlier this summer — have made it clear Brown hasn’t requested a trade.

“League sources close to the situation told ClutchPoints that Brown has not approached any member of the front office or team president Brad Stevens to ask for a trade,” Siegel reported.

So he’s not forcing his way out. But the Celtics have been listening. And the asking price is massive. Reports say Boston has asked for as many as four first-round picks in Brown discussions. That’s not a number you throw out if you’re eager to move a guy. That’s a number you throw out to say “prove you’re serious.”

So What’s Next for Portland?

With Brown off the table, the Trail Blazers are pretty clearly building around Morant as the centerpiece of their offseason. They have a weird roster now — three point guards who all need the ball, plus Lillard who’s still one of the best scorers in the league. Something’s gotta give there.

But the front office seems content to figure that out later. For now, the message is clear: the Morant trade was the headline. Not a setup for something bigger.
