The Portland Trail Blazers just made the kind of move that forces everybody else in the Western Conference to pay attention. Monday afternoon, they pulled off a blockbuster trade sending Jerami Grant and Kris Murray to Memphis in exchange for Ja Morant. The deal reshapes both rosters in a hurry, but the real story is what happens next in Portland’s backcourt.
ESPN’s Shams Charania was the first to report the trade, and he followed up with what he heard directly from the Blazers’ front office about Morant’s reaction. According to Charania, Morant told team officials he’s excited to be in Portland. That’s the kind of thing you’d expect a player to say after getting traded. But the roster situation is what makes this fascinating.
Right now the Blazers have Damian Lillard, Scoot Henderson, and Jrue Holiday all sharing the backcourt with Morant. That’s four players who need the ball in their hands to be effective. Something has to give. Some people around the league wondered if this might push Portland to finally make a serious run at Boston’s Jaylen Brown in a trade. Charania shot that down pretty quickly, reporting that the Blazers see the Morant acquisition as their big swing and aren’t actively pursuing Brown.
So what’s the plan? Maybe they move one of those guards before the deadline. Maybe they run some wild three-guard lineups and figure it out on the fly. The Blazers haven’t tipped their hand yet. But it’s hard to imagine Lillard, Morant, Henderson, and Holiday all happy with their minutes and touches long-term.
When healthy, Morant is as explosive as anybody in the league. His quickness and athleticism put constant pressure on defenses. But that version of Morant hasn’t been around consistently for a while. Off-court issues, injuries, and some shooting regression knocked his trade value down to what Portland gave up. To be fair, getting him for Grant and Murray feels like a steal if he returns to form.
There’s real risk here though. Morant hasn’t played a full healthy season in years. And the Blazers’ backcourt is now a mess of overlapping skill sets. But from Morant’s perspective, this is a fresh start in a new city with a franchise that just bet on him. Of course he’s excited.
The real test is whether Portland can figure out how to make all these pieces fit without burning everything down. They’ve got the talent to be dangerous. They’ve also got a lot of egos and contracts to manage. That’s the part that’ll determine if this trade looks smart in six months or like a desperate gamble.
