Porzingis Stays Put: Warriors Lock In $40 Million Extension

Kristaps Porzingis isn’t going anywhere. The Golden State Warriors and the veteran big man have agreed to a two-year, $40 million contract extension, according to Shams Charania of ESPN. The deal includes a player option for the second season, keeping Porzingis in the Bay Area through the 2027-28 campaign.

Agent Jeff Schwartz of Excel Sports Management confirmed the terms to ESPN. The timing matters here. Porzingis was set to hit the open market Tuesday night, and the Warriors moved before that deadline to lock him up. Bobby Marks noted the extension likely prevents Golden State from using the full non-taxpayer mid-level exception this offseason.

This is a clear signal from the front office. While rumors have swirled about the Warriors chasing bigger names — LeBron James and Anthony Davis have been the consistent headline hooks — the team chose to secure a core piece instead of waiting for a superstar pipe dream. Porzingis averaged 20.1 points and 7.2 rebounds last season while shooting 37.5% from three. That floor-spacing center is exactly what Steve Kerr’s system needs.

There was chatter that Porzingis could be a salary dump if Golden State pulled off a blockbuster for James and Davis. John Hollinger of The Athletic even called him a “likely casualty” in that scenario, saying it’d be nearly impossible to re-sign him for anything above the minimum with those two max contracts on the books. But that hypothetical is dead now. The Warriors made their choice.

What does this mean for the rest of the roster? The Warriors still have Andrew Wiggins, Draymond Green, and a young core including Jonathan Kuminga and Brandin Podziemski. They’ve got flexibility but not unlimited cap room. Porzingis’s $20 million annual hit is reasonable for a starting-caliber center who can stretch the floor and protect the rim. But it also limits how much they can spend elsewhere.

Fans on social media had mixed reactions. Some loved the continuity. Others worried the team missed a chance to reset for a bigger swing. The team hasn’t commented beyond the reported extension terms.

For now, Porzingis is a Warrior. And the James-Davis speculation? That’ll have to find a new home.
