Manchester United have been talking themselves in circles over West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes for weeks. The price tag is too high, the logic goes, and INEOS has been reluctant to budge. But Tottenham just showed up with a different approach: they’re ready to pay it.
According to The Athletic, Spurs have engaged directly with the player’s camp and super agent Jorge Mendes. They got the kind of encouragement that turns a long shot into a real threat. Fernandes would move across London if it meant getting out of a relegated West Ham side. And Tottenham, under Roberto De Zerbi’s direction, are seriously considering meeting that £80 million valuation outright.
United’s position has always been that they like the player. The 21-year-old made 36 Premier League appearances last season, averaged 84 minutes a game, and put up seven goals and assists combined. His numbers show a two-way midfielder who can progress the ball and contribute defensively. That’s exactly the profile United’s scouts identified after Casemiro’s departure to Inter Miami became a certainty. But the question has always been whether INEOS would pay up.
West Ham’s relegation complicated things. A change in ownership at the London Stadium gave the club financial flexibility they didn’t have before. They don’t have to sell cheap. The Athletic describes the asking price as a fundamental sticking point for United, who have already spent £39 million on Ederson from Atalanta this summer. That deal, for a more experienced player, is the kind of value-driven move INEOS prefers. Fernandes at £80 million is a different conversation entirely.
Spurs Have the Cash and the Intent
The Athletic reports that Tottenham’s interest has sharpened the timeline considerably. A formal offer from United hasn’t come yet, but the club expects to make one soon. Fernandes himself wants the move to Old Trafford. Personal terms aren’t expected to be a problem. Multiple outlets describe his desire to join United as unambiguous. Bruno Fernandes is a personal idol, and playing alongside him would be a dream scenario for the one-cap Portugal international.
But if Tottenham is willing to meet West Ham’s valuation and United isn’t, that preference might not matter much. Sporting director Jason Wilcox will have a decision to make. United has already watched Elliot Anderson slip away to Manchester City in this window. Losing a second midfield target to a domestic rival would be a real problem, regardless of how disciplined the financial logic looks on a spreadsheet.
Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, PSG, and Real Madrid have all been linked at various points, but only United and Spurs have made real moves. The presence of a 15% sell-on clause for Southampton, leftover from the £38 million deal that took Fernandes to West Ham last summer, means the Hammers want a clean fee rather than heavy add-ons.
West Ham’s need to balance their books before the end of the month could work in United’s favor, giving Wilcox’s team room to avoid a bidding war. But that clock cuts both ways. Tottenham is ready to act. The question now is whether INEOS moves fast enough to capitalize on Fernandes’ clear preference for United, or whether their resistance to the price tag gives Spurs the opening they need to end this pursuit on their terms.
