Real Madrid Might Sell Tchouameni. United Is Waiting.

Manchester United has been chasing a top-tier defensive midfielder for what feels like forever. And now, with Real Madrid apparently willing to listen to offers for Aurelien Tchouameni, that chase might finally end.

The French international doesn’t want to leave. According to Sportitalia’s Gianluigi Longari, Tchouameni’s preference is to stay in Madrid. But the club has other ideas. New manager Jose Mourinho reportedly wants to reshape the midfield, and that means bringing in players like Enzo Fernandez and Mateus Fernandes instead of relying on Tchouameni.

This is where it gets interesting for United. The club has what Fabrizio Romano called a “strong interest” in Tchouameni, and they’ve already made contact with his representatives. He’s 26, stands 6’2″, and was the guy Real signed to replace Casemiro in 2022. So the logic at Old Trafford is pretty straightforward: if he was good enough to replace Casemiro in Madrid, he’s good enough to replace him at United too.

A training ground incident that still echoes

Last season, Tchouameni was involved in a heated training ground altercation with Federico Valverde. AS reported that Real’s hierarchy, if forced to choose between the two, would rather keep the Uruguayan. That might be part of why the club is open to selling now.

But there’s another layer here. United’s pursuit of Tchouameni might actually hinge on whether Real can land Mateus Fernandes first. The Red Devils are also pushing hard to sign the West Ham midfielder, who has already agreed personal terms to move to Old Trafford. West Ham wants around €80 million for him. That’s £69.2 million.

And here’s the twist: United is reportedly seen as Real Madrid’s “main obstacle” in trying to sign Fernandes. So you’ve got this weird dance where both clubs want the same guy, and one of them might have to settle for the other option.

INEOS is planning a real overhaul

The word coming out of United’s camp is that INEOS wants to sign both Fernandes and Tchouameni as part of a major midfield rebuild for Michael Carrick’s side. That would be a statement. Two big names, two different skill sets, and a clear message that the club isn’t messing around anymore.

But as always with transfer windows, nothing is done until it’s signed. Real Madrid hasn’t confirmed anything about selling Tchouameni. The player hasn’t asked for a move. And Mourinho’s plans could shift depending on who actually becomes available.

For now, United waits. And watches. And hopes that Real’s desire for a different midfield style lines up with their own desperate need for a top-class holding mid. It might. It might not. That’s the fun part.
