When Jan Paul van Hecke steps onto the Tottenham training ground, he won’t just be another center back. He’ll be Roberto De Zerbi’s man — again. And that connection might be exactly what Spurs need after two straight seasons flirting with Premier League disaster.
According to multiple reports, including football insider Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham has agreed to a £52 million deal with Brighton for van Hecke. The Dutch international is expected to join the north London club after his World Cup commitments, reuniting with De Zerbi, who coached him at Brighton before taking over Spurs in March.
“Tottenham agree deal to sign Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton, here we go! 💣,” Romano posted on X. “New defender wanted by De Zerbi joining on £52m deal, agreement club to club done after player accepted #THFC conditions last week.”
This is Tottenham’s third signing of a summer that started with free transfers for left back Andy Robertson and center back Marcos Senesi from Liverpool and Bournemouth, respectively. The team has not confirmed the van Hecke deal, but the pattern is clear: De Zerbi is rebuilding Tottenham’s spine with players he trusts.
Why van Hecke fits the De Zerbi blueprint
De Zerbi’s system demands defenders comfortable on the ball and aggressive in pressing. Van Hecke, 25, checks both boxes after developing under De Zerbi at Brighton. At £52 million, the price tag raises eyebrows — especially for a club that just finished 17th. But context matters: Tottenham is desperate to avoid another relegation scare.
Last season was brutal even by recent standards. The 2024-25 campaign ended with a Europa League trophy — Tottenham’s first silverware since 2008 — but the Premier League form was so poor that manager Ange Postecoglou was fired. His replacement, Thomas Frank, flopped after arriving from Brentford. Then Igor Tudor came in as interim and somehow made things worse.
De Zerbi took over in late March and steadied the ship with a 3-2-1 finish, capped by a 1-0 win over Everton on the final day that kept Spurs up. Fans online noted the irony: a manager who built his reputation at Brighton is now raiding his old club to save Tottenham.
An already crowded center back room
Van Hecke will join Senesi, fellow Dutch international Micky Van de Ven, captain Cristian Romero, Radu Dragusin, Kevin Danso, and Luka Vuskovic as center back options. That’s six players for two starting spots. Something has to give, though the team has not indicated any departures yet.
De Zerbi’s track record suggests he values competition. At Brighton, he rotated heavily. But with Tottenham’s ownership expecting a top-half finish this season, the margin for error is thin. If van Hecke arrives and clicks with Senesi, don’t be surprised if Van de Ven or Romero is moved before the window closes.
The real question isn’t whether van Hecke is good — it’s whether he can help De Zerbi build something sustainable. Tottenham has cycled through managers and signings for years without a clear direction. This summer feels different. Whether it works is another story entirely.
