Bruno Fernandes’ Pitch Is the Secret Weapon in United’s Pursuit of Mateus Fernandes

Manchester United may have found an unexpected ally in their push to land one of Europe’s most coveted young midfielders — and he’s already wearing the captain’s armband.

According to reports, Portugal international Bruno Fernandes has been privately lobbying United’s hierarchy to green-light a move for Sporting Lisbon standout Mateus Fernandes. The 21-year-old, currently on loan at West Ham United, is said to be “desperate” to join the Red Devils specifically because he wants to play alongside his compatriot at club level.

The club has not confirmed the conversations, but the buzz around Old Trafford is hard to ignore.

Why This Deal Has Momentum

United had initially zeroed in on Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson as their top midfield target this summer. But with Manchester City the only Premier League side to submit a formal bid for Anderson — and United unwilling to get dragged into a bidding war — the club’s focus has shifted sharply toward Fernandes.

The Daily Mail reported earlier this week that United have entered discussions with Fernandes’ representatives and that personal terms are not expected to be an obstacle. The midfielder is rated as “one of the most exciting midfield prospects in Europe,” and interest from Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain, and Real Madrid hasn’t deterred United from pushing ahead.

Journalist Nathan Salt told the Stretford Paddock YouTube channel: “The player wants to join Man United. He’s desperate to play with Bruno Fernandes. Bruno Fernandes has sung his praises to the hierarchy. It shouldn’t in theory be a difficult deal to do.”

The Portugal Connection

Mateus Fernandes missed out on a spot in Portugal’s World Cup squad despite earning high praise from manager Roberto Martinez earlier this year. “Regarding Mateus Fernandes, what he’s doing now is incredible,” Martinez said at a March press conference. That endorsement only adds to the sense that the youngster is on the verge of a major leap.

Bruno Fernandes, meanwhile, has been in the ear of United’s decision-makers, selling the vision of a Portuguese midfield core at Old Trafford for years to come.

The Price Tag Standoff

West Ham, who face relegation to the Championship, value their loanee at around £85 million. United have yet to make a formal bid and have shown no interest in meeting that valuation. Sources suggest the Hammers believe they hold a stronger negotiating hand than United acknowledges, but INEOS sees things differently.

With West Ham likely needing to sell following a drop in division, and Fernandes’ personal preference clear, United appear comfortable playing the waiting game. The club has already reinforced midfield this window with the signing of Ederson from Atalanta, giving them room to be patient.

For now, the ball is in West Ham’s court — but Fernandes’ desire to link up with Bruno may ultimately force their hand.
