Tommy Edman’s Ankle Injury Wasn’t Serious. The Dodgers Are Happy About That.

The Los Angeles Dodgers keep winning, but they also keep getting banged up. That’s just how it’s gone for them lately.

On Tuesday, they got some good news on the injury front. Utility man Tommy Edman is expected back in the starting lineup for their game against the Colorado Rockies. He’d been out after taking a pitch to the ankle, but it looks like the damage was minor.

MLB.com noted Edman pinch-hit on July 5 and 6. The expectation was that he’d be back in the lineup by July 7, which is Tuesday’s game. So that’s happening.

Edman has been a really useful piece for the Dodgers since he got there. He can play multiple positions, he’s a switch-hitter, and he doesn’t seem to get rattled. Losing him for an extended stretch would have been annoying, but it looks like they dodged that bullet.

The pitching staff is another story

The Dodgers have been dealing with a bunch of pitching injuries this season. Tyler Glasnow has missed time. Edwin Diaz has been out. There’s been a rotating cast of arms coming and going from the injured list. It’s been a mess, honestly.

It kind of mirrors what happened last year, when the Dodgers limped through the regular season with a patched-together rotation and bullpen, then got healthy right when the playoffs started. That worked out pretty well for them. They’ve won two straight World Series titles, and they’re the first MLB team to hit 60 wins this season after a narrow home win over the Rockies.

The question is whether they can pull off a three-peat. That’s rare in any sport, and it’s especially hard in baseball. But the Dodgers have the talent. When they’re at full strength, there’s not really a team that can match up with them from a pure talent standpoint. The challenge is just getting everyone on the field at the same time and staying healthy through October.

Getting Edman back is a small step in that direction. The bigger one will be getting the pitchers right. But for now, they’ll take what they can get.
