The Cleveland Guardians bullpen has been a quiet strength in a 47-44 season that feels like it could tip either way. And one of the biggest reasons is a Canadian right-hander who went undrafted in 2020 and now finds himself heading to his first All-Star Game.
Reliever Cade Smith got the call this week, and his reaction was about as honest as you’d expect from someone who didn’t see this coming a few years ago.
“I’m super excited. I think it’s a huge honor. I’m really grateful for the honor. I’m looking forward to completing a new experience. I’m looking forward to just going and trying to soak it up as best I can. I really don’t know what to expect,” Smith told MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM.
Then came the joke that probably landed harder than he expected. The Guardians have two rookies — Travis Bazzana and Parker Messick — also making All-Star appearances this year. Smith, technically a second-year player but still new to this whole thing, wasn’t about to play the mentor role.
“I hope they aren’t looking at me for all the answers… this is my first one too,” he said with a laugh.
From undrafted to All-Star
Smith debuted in 2024 after signing with Cleveland following the 2020 draft. That year, nobody picked him. Now he’s one of the most reliable arms in a Guardians bullpen that has helped keep a flawed team in playoff contention. He doesn’t overpower guys with triple-digit heat, but his command and a biting slider have made him a go-to option in tight games.
The Guardians are about to get a few days off for the break, but not before a Tuesday night game against the Minnesota Twins. Then it’s off to Philadelphia for the Midsummer Classic on July 14.
Smith said he plans to soak it all in. Don’t ask him for directions. Don’t ask him for advice. He’s just there to enjoy the ride.
