Thierry Henry Put Derek Jeter on the Spot With a David Ortiz Question That Hit Different

Derek Jeter and David Ortiz spent years trying to destroy each other on the field. Now they share a broadcast booth. And apparently, the booth is harder.

It happened Tuesday night during the 2026 MLB All-Star Game in Philadelphia, where FOX Sports had soccer legend Thierry Henry on for an interview. Henry, who knows a thing or two about intense rivalries from his days at Arsenal, looked at Jeter and asked a question that got straight to the point: What was tougher — being the face of the Yankees for a decade and a half, or sitting next to David Ortiz every day?

Jeter didn’t hesitate. He laughed, but he didn’t duck it.

“First of all, I appreciate the question. I really do appreciate you acknowledging the fact that it’s very difficult to sit here on a daily basis, especially in October, next to this guy right here,” Jeter said, according to FOX Sports. “But I’ll tell you what, it’s been fun. I didn’t know David when I played against him. I didn’t want to get to know opponents. We disliked him, we wanted to battle him, we wanted to beat him. But it’s more difficult sitting next to him. I’m going to be honest. I’ve tried to clean it up a bit, but it’s way more difficult.”

Ortiz was sitting right there, laughing. Henry was laughing. The whole thing felt less like an interview and more like a roast with a guest appearance.

The Booth Is the New Battleground

It’s kind of wild when you think about it. Jeter and Ortiz were the faces of the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry at its peak. They played in some of the most tense, high-stakes games in baseball history. Jeter never wanted to know his opponents off the field. That was a rule. Ortiz was the enemy. Now they sit next to each other and talk baseball for a living. That’s a bigger adjustment than any cutter or fastball.

Jeter’s been doing the TV thing for a few years now, and he’s clearly comfortable enough to crack jokes about the situation. But the fact that he can joke about it with the guy right there says something. The old animosity has turned into something else. Maybe not friendship exactly. But something that works on TV.

The All-Star Game Was Fine

The game itself didn’t produce much drama. The American League won 4-0, and it was mostly a pitchers’ duel with a few runs sprinkled in. No walk-offs, no controversy, just a clean game in Philly. The real entertainment happened before the first pitch.

The Yankees are back on the field Friday against the Dodgers at home. Ortiz will probably be somewhere else. Jeter might finally get a break from cleaning up his language.
