Manchester United is shopping for a striker again. That much has been clear for weeks. What’s less clear is how much INEOS is willing to spend on one. The number might be somewhere around $55 million.
That’s the figure floating around Sunderland’s asking price for Brian Brobbey, the Dutch striker who spent last season proving he can hang in the Premier League. According to German outlet Fussballdaten, the Black Cats won’t even answer the phone unless a bid lands in the $55 million range. Transfermarkt has him at around $30 million, but Sunderland’s board seems to be betting on a bidding war to push the number up.
Brobbey is 24. He scored eight times last season for Sunderland, which doesn’t jump off the page, but the numbers miss the point. His real value is in how he plays. He’s built like a fridge and knows how to use it. Under pressure, holding the ball up, muscling off defenders — that’s where he makes his money. United has needed someone like that for a while now.
Interest isn’t coming from just one direction. VfB Stuttgart wants him. Atlético Madrid is watching. Juventus too. And in England, Chelsea, Tottenham, and Aston Villa are all reportedly in the mix. The Dutch international’s stock rose even higher after his World Cup performances for the Netherlands this summer.
Michael Carrick, who has a voice in United’s recruitment now, has been clear about needing an experienced backup behind Benjamin Sesko. The club signed only Sesko last summer while keeping Joshua Zirkzee in the No. 2 role. Zirkzee is well-liked in the locker room, but the goals haven’t come. INEOS sees that as a problem they’d rather solve now than later.
The bigger question is whether United can afford to make this move and still get the midfield reinforcements they need. Manuel Ugarte is dealing with an injury. Talks for Mateus Fernandes have hit a wall. Money is finite, even for a club with United’s revenue streams. If they chase Brobbey at $55 million, something else might have to wait.
Brobbey was on United’s radar back when Erik ten Hag was in charge. The difference now is that he’s proven he can handle the league. He’s not a project. He’s a known commodity. Whether INEOS sees him as a $55 million one is the part nobody knows yet.
