The Minnesota Lynx are rolling, and their head coach just made history doing it.
Cheryl Reeve picked up her 379th regular-season win on Sunday as the Lynx handled the Dallas Wings 85-77 at College Park Center. That ties Reeve with Mike Thibault for the most regular-season wins in WNBA history. Not bad for a coach who was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame the night before.
The Lynx led by as many as 23 points and never trailed after the game’s opening minute. They improved to 15-4 overall and a ridiculous 9-1 on the road. Dallas dropped to 11-8.
Natasha Howard put up 21 points and 14 rebounds with three steals. Olivia Miles matched her with 21 points and added eight assists. Kayla McBride and Courtney Williams combined for 29 points, six boards and six assists. It was a straightforward beatdown.
Reeve’s Hall of Fame Weekend
Reeve, 59, was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in Knoxville on Saturday alongside Candace Parker and Elena Delle Donne. Then she went out and tied the wins record the next day. That’s a solid weekend by any standard.
She already holds the WNBA record for most playoff wins. Now she’s tied for the regular-season mark. The next chance to break it comes Friday against the New York Liberty.
But Reeve isn’t just piling up wins. She’s been vocal about what the league needs to improve. Speaking with ESPN’s Michael Voepel, she talked about the WNBA’s recent shift toward listening to coaches and players more closely.
“I don’t think there’s any doubt about the investment of time and money that’s been made and attention,” Reeve said. “The two years of frustration I felt that showed itself (last season) was that they were not listening to key stakeholders. It was not a collaboration. That has changed dramatically.”
She added: “There is a lot more transparency, at least with the teams. The next step is to be more transparent publicly.”
The four-time champion coach has never been shy about pushing for better officiating and communication. That hasn’t changed just because she’s now tied for the most wins ever.
Minnesota sits atop the standings with the best record in the league. The Lynx have won five of their last six games. Reeve gets her shot at the outright record on Friday night.
