Manchester United did something this week that sounds routine but hasn’t been for them. They got offered a young striker with a famous last name and a few lingering question marks. And they said no.
According to TeamTalk, Liam Delap was shopped around to clubs after a miserable year at Chelsea. United were among the teams contacted. But the response from Old Trafford was basically a polite version of “we’re good.”
That matters because this is a club that has spent the last decade saying yes to the wrong gambles. Antony. Donny van de Beek. The ghost of Memphis Depay. Collecting players who might become something instead of signing guys who already are something. Delap was trending in that direction.
A year ago, United wanted him at Ipswich. Back then he looked like the next big thing out of the Championship. Chelsea swooped in, paid the £30 million release clause, and everybody figured it was a smart bet. What happened next was not smart. Two goals. Four assists. 41 appearances. Injuries. A loan spell that went nowhere. Xabi Alonso basically told him to find a new home this summer.
What United actually needs
United still wants a center forward before the window closes. That part hasn’t changed. But the profile has shifted. Benjamin Sesko is the top target according to TeamTalk. Matheus Cunha and Joshua Zirkzee are in the mix too, though Cunha works better as a second striker and Zirkzee keeps getting linked with Juventus.
The i Paper has Dusan Vlahovic and Ollie Watkins on the radar. Vlahovic is available as a free agent after leaving Juventus. Watkins would cost a fortune and Aston Villa doesn’t want to sell. One is attainable with question marks. The other is expensive and complicated. Both make more sense than chasing a guy with two goals in 41 games who got told he can leave.
There was a weird moment in the TeamTalk report where Delap got called a winger. He’s not a winger. He’s a center forward. But that mistake kind of proves the point. If the reports getting circulated can’t even nail his position, maybe the whole thing needed a second look.
Why this actually feels different
For United fans, the encouraging part isn’t that they passed on one mediocre season from a 21-year-old. It’s that they looked at a name, looked at the numbers, and made a cold calculation. That hasn’t been the default setting at this club for a long time. Too often United bought into narratives, into potential, into “well United needs him so let’s make it work.”
This time they looked at Delap’s Chelsea tape and saw a player who didn’t solve anything. No presence. No reliability. No guarantee the goals would ever come at this level.
United still needs someone who can put the ball in the net consistently. They’ve had problems in that department for years. But the solution isn’t another maybe. It’s a player who walks into the lineup and makes everyone around him better. Delap might get there someday, maybe at a different club with less pressure. But United doesn’t have time to wait and find out.
Vlahovic is sitting out there as a free agent. Watkins would be a statement signing if they could pull it off. Sesko is probably the dream. None of them are perfect. All of them are better bets than a guy Chelsea is actively trying to move.
