The New York Yankees have looked nothing like themselves over the last 10 games, and the front office is clearly hunting for answers. With the trade deadline about a month away, the rumor mill is already churning. And it’s pointing toward a familiar position of need: catcher.
According to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com, the Yankees have been linked to Minnesota Twins catcher Ryan Jeffers. The logic makes some sense. Austin Wells has been on the injured list, and even before that, his bat just wasn’t producing the kind of power the Yankees expected. Wells is solid behind the plate — his game-calling and framing have been steady — but the lineup needs more thump.
Hoch noted that Jeffers, who has been limited to 37 games this season, already has a connection with Yankees catching coach Tanner Swanson from their time together in the Twins organization. That kind of pre-existing relationship is the sort of detail that fuels trade speculation this time of year.
The Twins are having their own up-and-down season, and it wouldn’t be shocking if they ended up selling off pieces. Jeffers is a name that could draw interest from multiple contenders, but the Yankees have the prospect capital and a clear need.
Slump or just a rough patch
The Yankees are still 49-40 and sitting in second place in the AL East. That’s not a disaster. But they’re also dealing with injuries to Aaron Judge and Max Fried, two of the most important guys on the roster. Nobody seems to know exactly when either one will be back, and the offense has felt flat without them.
It’s not just one thing, either. The starting pitching has been inconsistent. The bullpen has had some shaky outings. And the lineup, even when healthy-ish, has struggled to string together rallies. A catcher who can actually hit would help. Jeffers has shown pop when he’s been on the field, and the Yankees have to weigh whether Wells is the long-term answer or just a placeholder.
This isn’t the first time the Yankees and Twins have been linked in trade talks, of course. The two teams have done business before. But the clock is ticking, and if New York wants to make a run, they need to make a move sooner rather than later.
For now, the Yankees are just trying to tread water until their stars get healthy. The question is whether they’ll hold steady or start sinking.
