Jazz Chisholm Jr. left Sunday’s game early with what looked like a nasty toe issue, and for a minute there it felt like the Yankees might have another injury headache. He pulled up awkwardly during a play against the Twins, and the team lost 6-1 that day. But the update coming out of Tampa Bay on Monday is better than most fans expected.
Chisholm is in the lineup for Monday’s game against the Rays. He’s batting sixth and playing second base, his usual spot. The Yankees officially posted it, so it’s not a game-time guess or a maybe-he-pinches-hits situation. He’s out there.
The 28-year-old infielder has been a spark plug since coming over from Miami. He brings energy, some pop in the bat and the kind of defensive range that makes the middle infield look tight. Losing him for any stretch, even a day or two, would sting for a Yankees team that’s already dealt with its share of lineup shuffling this year.
There’s no official word yet on whether the toe is fully fine or if he’s just playing through some soreness. The team hasn’t released a medical update beyond the lineup card. But the fact he’s starting suggests it’s not serious — or at least not serious enough to sit him. Either way, Yankees fans can exhale a little.
This is a division game and Tropicana Field is never an easy place to play. The Rays are scrappy, and the Yankees need every healthy bat they can get. Chisholm being in the lineup gives them a better shot at getting back on track after that loss to Minnesota.
We’ll see if he lasts the full nine or if the toe flares up during the game. The team is probably monitoring it closely. For now though, he’s at second base and ready to go.
