Steven Gerrard Targets Manchester United Coach for Burnley Staff if He Lands Job

Steven Gerrard hasn’t managed a game since leaving Al-Ettifaq in January 2025—but according to new reports, he’s already planning his backroom team for a potential Championship return. And the name at the top of his list might raise some eyebrows at Old Trafford.

Journalist Alan Nixon reported Sunday that Gerrard is targeting Manchester United assistant Steve Holland as his number two, should the former Liverpool captain be appointed Burnley’s next manager. The move, described by Nixon as “ambitious,” would pit Gerrard’s pull against the allure of Champions League football at United—where Holland has worked under Michael Carrick since January.

Burnley’s Manager Search Drags Into Summer

Scott Parker was sacked with four games left in the 2025-26 Premier League season after Burnley finished 19th and dropped back to the Championship. Mike Jackson stepped in as interim, but the club has yet to name a permanent replacement weeks after the season ended. Gerrard has been the name most frequently linked to the vacancy, though the club hasn’t confirmed any shortlist.

Whoever takes over will inherit a team with a financial edge. Burnley collected roughly £35 million in compensation from Everton over Profit and Sustainability Rule breaches, and Premier League parachute payments give them a spending advantage over most Championship rivals.

What Holland Would Bring

Holland’s résumé goes well beyond his brief stint at Old Trafford. He served as Chelsea’s assistant under André Villas-Boas, José Mourinho, and Antonio Conte, winning Premier League titles along the way. He was also Gareth Southgate’s right-hand man with England, earning an OBE in 2022. At 56, he’s one of the most experienced assistants in English football.

Nixon reports that Gerrard is actively searching for a new assistant because his former Rangers lieutenant Mick Beale is now managing Belgian side Zulte Waregem. That opens the door for a reunion with Holland—if Burnley can sell the project.

Can Burnley Lure Him Away?

The biggest obstacle isn’t money—it’s momentum. Carrick turned United’s season around after taking over, guiding them back into the Champions League and positioning the club for a title push in 2026-27. Walking away from that to join a Championship rebuild would take some convincing.

But Burnley has ambition. A quick return to the Premier League is the goal, and a staff led by Gerrard with Holland by his side would signal the club isn’t settling for survival. For now, the speculation is just that—speculation. But if Gerrard gets the job, the call to Holland might be his first big move.
