Spurs Swiped Sandro Tonali From Arsenal’s Grasp. Here’s What Really Happened.

Arsenal had Sandro Tonali in their sights this summer. Mikel Arteta wanted him. The club ran the numbers. And then they walked away. Not because they didn’t rate the player, but because the price tag went beyond the transfer fee.

According to ChronicleLive’s Lee Ryder, the Gunners balked at Tonali’s wage demands and the agent fees attached to the deal. The numbers got too rich for their blood, so they let Newcastle midfielder Tonali slide right over to Tottenham Hotspur. Spurs didn’t blink. They agreed to a £100 million package — £92.5 million up front with another £7.5 million in add-ons — and handed the Italian a £275,000-a-week contract. That’s nearly double what he’s making now.

The Numbers That Changed Everything

Spurs had originally offered £85 million two weeks ago. Newcastle held firm, and eventually Tottenham came back with a better offer. The structure of the deal worked for the Magpies, and Tonali reportedly agreed to terms pretty quickly after that. Arsenal never got that far. They looked at the total cost of acquisition — wages, fees, agent payouts — and decided the math didn’t add up for them.

This is the same Arsenal squad that just won the Premier League last season. They don’t exactly need to panic-buy. But losing out on a player of Tonali’s caliber to their North London rivals stings a little. Especially when you consider that Spurs nearly got relegated last year while Arsenal was lifting the trophy. The tables have turned fast.

Spurs Are Spending Like They Mean It

Tottenham is making moves. Manager Roberto De Zerbi has already brought in Martin Dubravka, Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson, and Jan Paul van Hecke last month. Then they dropped another £85 million on Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United. And now Tonali. That’s a lot of firepower for a team that spent most of last season looking over its shoulder at the relegation zone.

But here’s the thing about this Tonali deal specifically. Arsenal wanted him. They identified him as a target. But they weren’t willing to match what Spurs offered in total compensation. That’s not a bad strategy — Arsenal has been careful with its wage structure under Arteta, and blowing it up for one player could cause issues down the line. But it also means they just watched their biggest rival land a midfielder who’s been one of the best in the Premier League.

Spurs, for their part, are probably pretty happy to have pipped Arsenal to a top player, especially after losing Eberechi Eze to the Gunners last summer. That one stung. This one feels like payback.

Tonali’s contract runs for five years. At £275,000 a week, that’s a serious commitment. But if he plays like he did at Newcastle, it might look like a bargain in a couple of years. Arsenal will have to live with the decision. And hope their own midfield reinforcements work out.
