Dortmund Slaps a Nine-Figure Price Tag on Felix Nmecha. United Has a Problem.

Borussia Dortmund has put a £103 million valuation on Felix Nmecha. That number is not a negotiation starting point. It is a warning shot.

The Athletic confirmed Manchester United’s interest in the 24-year-old Germany international this week. And the gap between United’s appetite and Dortmund’s asking price could be measured in the tens of millions. Possibly more.

Dortmund brought Nmecha in from Wolfsburg in July 2023 for about €30 million. He signed a contract extension through 2030. That gives the club a stranglehold on any transfer talks. A reported €80 million release clause does not kick in until 2027. Until then, Dortmund sets the price. They have set it at nine figures.

German outlets Kicker and Bild have described the £103 million stance as a deterrent tactic. A price designed to chase off most of Europe’s elite. Independent valuation models put Nmecha’s market value between €28 million and €34 million. That is not a typo. The gap is that wide.

Dortmund sources told Football Insider the club feels “relaxed” about the situation. That is usually code for: we do not need to sell and we know it. They have the long contract. They have the leverage. They have no reason to budge.

Why United is in this mess

United already spent €45 million on Atalanta midfielder Éderson this summer. That was confirmed by The Athletic. Michael Carrick’s rebuild in midfield is happening. But stacking a £103 million Nmecha fee on top of that creates obvious financial strain, especially with PSR rules and INEOS keeping a close eye on the books.

Earlier reports floated a United proposal around €47 million for Nmecha. Dortmund essentially laughed that off. The gap between what United wants to pay and what Dortmund demands is not a bridge. It is a canyon.

United is not the only club watching. Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Newcastle, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Tottenham and Inter have all kicked the tires at some point. Inter was reportedly told it would take €60 million just to get serious talks started. Dortmund’s valuation sits above all of that.

Competition usually inflates prices. Here, Dortmund already set the ceiling so high that most suitors have not bothered to test it with a formal bid.

United also looked at Dortmund defender Waldemar Anton earlier in the window. That was a much more affordable target. Nmecha is a completely different financial conversation.

Where this goes from here

United has other midfield targets ranked higher on the priority list, per some reports. If those options fall through, Nmecha could move up. But that would force a decision from INEOS: are they willing to authorize a nine-figure fee in a window already carrying significant spending?

There is no release clause to force Dortmund’s hand before 2027. No mechanism to bypass their stance. The only way this happens is if United — or someone else — submits a formal bid in the £70-100 million range and prays Dortmund blinks first.

Right now, there is no evidence they will.
