Sophie Cunningham had a pretty normal Saturday night. She watched some fights. Walked around an Octagon. Held a sign. You know, typical WNBA guard stuff.
The Indiana Fever guard showed up at UFC 329 in Las Vegas as a guest ring card girl during the co-main event between Paddy Pimblett and Benoit Saint Denis. Cunningham, who plays alongside Caitlin Clark in Indiana’s backcourt, traded her Fever uniform for an all-black outfit and carried the round card in front of a packed T-Mobile Arena crowd.
She also brought her signature finger-pointing celebration with her. The move went viral during a Fever game earlier this season, and fans online ate it up when she broke it out inside the Octagon. One clip posted by Hoop Central showed her pointing at the camera mid-stride, looking completely at home in a totally different sport’s environment.
Cunningham wasn’t listed on the official card. She just showed up and got the nod. The UFC clearly saw an opportunity, and she leaned into it.
The Timing Worked Out Perfectly
The Fever are in Vegas for a Sunday night game against the Aces at Michelob ULTRA Arena. Tip is set for 9 p.m. ET. With Saturday off, Cunningham had time to take in the fights and pick up a side gig. Indiana’s been rolling lately too. They’ve won three of their last four, with the only loss coming against the Sparks on July 8. The Fever sit at 13-9, which is the best record in the Eastern Conference and fifth-best in the WNBA overall.
Not bad for a team that spent the last few years at the bottom of the standings.
The Fights Themselves Were Basically Over Before They Started
Pimblett finished Saint Denis with a D’Arce choke 52 seconds into the first round. So Cunningham’s walkaround happened, and then pretty much immediately, the fight was over. The main event was even shorter. Conor McGregor returned after nearly five years away from the UFC, threw one kick, appeared to injure his knee, and the fight was stopped after 69 seconds. Combined, the two main card fights lasted two minutes and one second.
That’s less time than it takes to heat up a Hot Pocket.
Cunningham likely had a better night than McGregor did. And honestly? She might have been the most memorable part of the whole co-main event window. The Fever play the Aces on Sunday, and it’s a safe bet her phone has been blowing up with teammates asking about the Octagon moment.
She probably won’t need an encore. But if the UFC calls again, she already knows how to work the room.
