Shane Bieber Is Back on the Mound. The Blue Jays Need Him Now More Than Ever.

The Toronto Blue Jays got their guy back on Tuesday. Shane Bieber, the former Cleveland ace who has spent most of the last two seasons on the injured list, was officially reinstated from the 60-day IL ahead of an afternoon start against the Houston Astros. First pitch is at 4:07 ET, and for the first time since last postseason, Bieber will toe the rubber.

To make room, Toronto announced two corresponding moves: right-hander Lazaro Estrada was optioned to Triple-A, and righty Hayden Juenger was designated for assignment. It’s a clear signal that the front office believes Bieber is healthy enough to be a difference-maker, not just a warm body filling a rotation spot.

Here’s the thing about Bieber: we haven’t really seen him since 2023. He’s appeared in only 12 total games with the Blue Jays since they acquired him. He’s pitched just 52.1 innings across the 2024 and 2025 seasons combined. That’s less than a third of a normal year for a starter. But the guy is 31 years old, and his career numbers are still legit: a 3.24 ERA, a 1.11 WHIP, and a 66-34 record. He’s also five strikeouts shy of 1,000 for his career. It would be fitting if he got that milestone against the Astros on Tuesday.

Why this return matters more than a typical roster move

The Blue Jays are sitting at .500 right now. They’ve won six of their last ten and two in a row. That’s not a great place to be, but it’s not a hopeless one either. They’re 7.5 games back in the AL East and currently holding onto the final wild card spot. With the trade deadline at the end of July, the front office has to decide whether to buy or sell. Having Bieber back — and pitching like the guy who won a Cy Young — would make that decision a lot easier.

Toronto hasn’t said much publicly about how they’ll handle the deadline, but the team has not confirmed any trade talks involving Bieber. What they have said is that he’s part of the rotation plan down the stretch. Maybe that’s true, or maybe it’s a way to pump up his trade value. Either way, having a healthy Bieber on the mound gives the Jays options they didn’t have a week ago.

There’s also the simple fact that watching Bieber pitch is fun. He’s never been a flamethrower, but he works fast and he works smart. He locates, he changes speeds, and he gets weak contact. That’s exactly the type of arm a team needs when the bullpen is already stretched thin.

So yeah, Tuesday afternoon is a big one in Toronto. Not just for the game itself, but for what it might say about the next two months. If Bieber looks sharp, the Blue Jays suddenly have a rotation that can hang with anyone. If he looks rusty, well, that’s a different conversation.
