Jazz Chisholm Jr. Sucked on a Lollipop During a Game. Aaron Boone Is Not Amused.

The New York Yankees just dropped their third straight game, a 5-3 loss to the Detroit Tigers. But the real story from Sunday wasn’t the score. It was Jazz Chisholm Jr. casually working on a lollipop while playing second base.

Yeah. A lollipop. During a major league game.

Aaron Boone found out about it after the final out and he wasn’t exactly thrilled. “Oh yeah, that pisses me off,” Boone said on the Talkin’ Yanks podcast. “I didn’t know about it until after the game. So he and I talked about that. That won’t be going on.”

The incident happened in the bottom of the fifth inning with the Yankees trailing 4-1. Not exactly the kind of vibe you want from a guy hitting .226 on the season who’s supposed to be a difference-maker. Chisholm went 1-for-4 with a single and two strikeouts in that game. That one hit came with the lollipop already a distant memory, for what it’s worth.

Here’s the thing: this wasn’t even the first time he’s done it. Earlier this season, Chisholm took an at-bat with a lollipop against the Boston Red Sox. Boone didn’t know about that one either until a reporter brought it up. “That was the second time? There was another time?” Boone said. “Yeah… I’m not on that.”

It’s a bad look for a guy who came into the season talking about a 50-50 season — 50 homers, 50 steals. Right now he’s got 11 home runs and 31 RBIs. He’s hitting .183 in June with five homers and 11 RBIs. Not exactly 50-50 pace.

The Yankees have now lost four of their last five games. They’re still sitting in first place in the AL East at 46-31, but the vibe around this team feels a little off. They’ve got the Tigers again Tuesday night in Detroit, and you can bet Boone will be watching Chisholm’s dugout snacking habits a lot more closely.

Maybe stick to sunflower seeds, Jazz.
