Manchester United’s midfield shopping list just got a little more interesting. According to reports out of Spain, Real Madrid could be forced into selling Aurélien Tchouaméni this summer — and Chelsea might be the ones who accidentally opened the door.
The short version: Real Madrid really wants Enzo Fernández. Chelsea really wants to sell him. And Madrid reportedly needs to offload a big salary to make the math work. Tchouaméni, despite being a key piece for Carlo Ancelotti, is the guy who could get squeezed out if the money doesn’t add up otherwise.
Sport, a Spanish outlet, says this scenario is ‘gaining traction.’ Not that Madrid has made a final call, but the idea of Tchouaméni being the unexpected casualty of a Fernández deal is no longer just barstool chatter. It’s something the club is reportedly considering.
Why United Cares
Man United already locked up Ederson Silva from Atalanta for around £38 million. But Michael Carrick’s midfield rebuild doesn’t stop there. Multiple reports, including one from Fabrizio Romano in late May, have pegged Tchouaméni as a ‘dream target’ for the club — a player the staff thinks could become the next Casemiro-type anchor.
Romano also made it clear that getting him wouldn’t be easy. High salary, important role at Madrid, all that. But if Madrid needs to raise £120 million for Fernández, suddenly those doors creak open a little wider.
One Big Problem
United’s flexibility took a hit recently. Manuel Ugarte, who was expected to be moved on this summer either permanently or on loan, is now sidelined with a knee injury. According to Caught Offside, that’s forced Carrick and the front office to ‘rethink their transfer strategy.’ You can’t sell a guy who can’t pass a physical, and you can’t clear his wages off the books the same way.
That doesn’t kill the Tchouaméni pursuit. But it makes it harder for United to be aggressive unless they can offload someone else — or unless Madrid’s need to sell becomes urgent enough to lower the asking price.
Right now, the most likely outcome is still that Tchouaméni stays in Madrid. But the fact that his name is being floated as a makeweight for a Chelsea guy says a lot about how the summer transfer window might shake out. And for United, that’s worth watching closely.
