Marcus Rashford is packing his bags for Manchester United this summer, but he really doesn’t want to stay. The 28-year-old forward spent last season on loan at Barcelona, put up 14 goals and 14 assists, helped them win La Liga again. Hansi Flick loved having him. Lamine Yamal and Raphinha started on the wings, but Rashford was the flexible depth piece who could slide in as a sub or fill in when one of them got banged up. It worked. Until it didn’t.
Barcelona had a £26 million buy option in that loan deal. They didn’t pull the trigger. The June 15 deadline for the loan passed, no agreement in place. Months of talks went nowhere. Instead, Barcelona spent £70 million on Anthony Gordon from Newcastle — Rashford’s direct competition for the left wing spot on England’s national team. Funny thing is, Rashford has had a noticeably better World Cup in North America than Gordon so far. That might be making Barcelona wonder if they made the right call.
So who actually wants Rashford now?
Plenty of clubs. Arsenal, Aston Villa, Newcastle, Tottenham have all kicked the tires. INEOS reportedly has a sort of gentleman’s agreement with Rashford: if a Premier League club comes in with £40 million, they can have him — except Liverpool and Manchester City are off the table. Bayern Munich was chasing Gordon before Barcelona swooped in, so they’re paying attention now. Turkish outlets say Fenerbahce and Galatasaray both have him on their lists, and fans in Istanbul are apparently excited about the idea.
But Rashford isn’t interested in Turkey right now. He wants a top European club. Bayern would work. A renewed Barcelona push would be ideal. He’s not keen on joining another Premier League team either, which complicates things for Tottenham.
According to Fotomac, Spurs are still preparing an offer. They’ve got him high on their summer wishlist. The problem is they don’t want to pay £40 million. Roberto De Zerbi is pushing for the deal, but that gap in valuation makes it tough. Meanwhile, Bayern’s interest could be the deciding factor. Rashford really wants Champions League football next season. Whether Bayern wants to spend that kind of money on a guy who turns 29 in October is another question.
United just wants him gone. Permanently. They don’t care where, as long as the check clears. But here’s the thing: Rashford seems willing to wait for Barcelona to circle back. Word is the Catalans are thinking about another loan, maybe with an obligation to buy down the line. United told them no during earlier negotiations. But with fewer options on the table and Rashford dead set on going back to Spain, INEOS might have to bend. If this drags into August, a compromise starts looking a lot more likely.
