Manchester United’s midfield shopping list just got one name shorter. And honestly, it probably wasn’t as realistic as some wanted to believe.
Aurelien Tchouameni is expected to sign a new contract with Real Madrid that runs through 2031, according to Fabrizio Romano. The deal isn’t signed yet but it’s close. That basically closes the door on any United move this summer or anytime soon.
This isn’t really a surprise. Tchouameni makes a lot of money at Madrid. Madrid didn’t want to sell. Those two things alone make a transfer nearly impossible for any club, let alone one trying to work within a budget and figure out its own financial structure under new ownership.
Why United never got close
From United’s side, the interest made sense. Tchouameni is exactly the kind of midfielder they need — strong defensively, calm under pressure, experienced at the highest level. He starts for France. He won a Champions League. He’s the sort of signing that says “we’re serious.”
But interest doesn’t get a deal done. Real Madrid never opened the door to negotiations. And the player’s wages were always going to be a problem. United can afford a lot of things but they can’t afford to overpay for a guy whose club wasn’t interested in moving him.
So this was never really a chase. It was admiration from a distance. The kind of thing where you look at the menu but the kitchen’s already closed.
Now what for United’s midfield
The Red Devils have other targets. They always did. But the public flirtation with Tchouameni was a reminder that the club wants a statement name in midfield. Problem is, statement names cost statement money and statement contracts. And the players who fit that description usually don’t leave Madrid.
United should move on quickly. There are midfielders out there who actually want the move and fit the budget. Wasting weeks or months on a guy who was never going to leave the Bernabeu isn’t a strategy, it’s a distraction.
Tchouameni staying in Spain is fine for him. He’s at one of the biggest clubs in the world, winning trophies, playing big games. United just needs to find someone else. Someone available, affordable and willing. That’s a harder combo to find than it sounds. But it’s the one they have to work with.
