Manchester United has never been shy with the checkbook. But since Sir Alex Ferguson walked away in 2013, the club has basically treated the transfer market like a fire sale where they’re the ones lighting the matches. Total spending? Roughly £1.4 billion over nine years. That’s a lot of money for a lot of disappointment.
Planet Football put together a quiz asking fans to name United’s 25 most expensive signings in club history. They gave everyone 15 minutes, listed the fee and the year as clues, and left off any add-on clauses. It sounds simple until you realize how many flops are on that list.
Ferguson wasn’t afraid to spend either. He broke the British transfer record a few times. But the difference is his big-money buys mostly worked. Van Persie, Rio Ferdinand, Wayne Rooney. Those guys delivered trophies. The post-Fergie era has been a different story. Di Maria, Pogba, Sancho, Antony. Big names, bigger price tags, wildly inconsistent results.
Spending doesn’t equal success
United’s transfer strategy has been a punching bag for years. And honestly, the criticism is fair. They’ve cycled through managers, changed sporting directors, and still end up overpaying for players who don’t fit. The Glazers took dividends out while the squad rotted. Then the club panic-bought its way into dysfunction. The numbers back it up. United’s net spend since 2013 is among the highest in world soccer. Their trophy count in that same span is among the lowest for a club of their stature.
Quiz time for the faithful
The quiz itself covers the full range. Some names are obvious. Paul Pogba at £89 million. Harry Maguire at £80 million. Jadon Sancho at £73 million. Others are trickier. Like Juan Mata at £37 million or Ander Herrera at £29 million. Both came years ago but still sit on the list because United just kept spending more on worse players. The most expensive signing in club history remains Paul Pogba’s return from Juventus in 2016. That deal aged like milk left in a hot car.
If you want to test yourself, the quiz is up on Planet Football’s site. They also linked a second challenge: name every player Fergie used in his final season. That one might be even harder. Because at least the expensive signings are memorable. Even the bad ones.
