Manchester United’s midfield rebuild under Michael Carrick is already one of the busier projects in Europe. After bringing in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko last summer, the club turned its attention to the engine room. And one name keeps surfacing: Aurelien Tchouameni.
The Athletic’s Andy Mitten dropped a fresh update on the Talk of the Devils podcast this week. According to Mitten, United has tracked the French international for years. He called Tchouameni “one of the best players in his position.” And here’s the key bit: the 26-year-old would “like to play for Manchester United” if the situation at Real Madrid changes.
And the situation might change. Real Madrid signed Tchouameni from Monaco for a reported €80 million in 2022. He won a Champions League and a La Liga title in his first two seasons. But Jose Mourinho, now in charge at the Bernabeu, wants a different kind of midfield profile. Specifically, a creative passer. Tchouameni is more of a destroyer — strong, physical, excellent at breaking up play. Mourinho reportedly sees that as a surplus, not a need.
So Real is open to listening to offers. That’s according to an earlier report from The Athletic, and Mitten’s comments reinforce the idea that something might give before the window closes.
United has been lurking for a while. Carrick’s system relies on a mobile, ball-winning midfielder who can also carry the ball forward. Tchouameni fits that description. He’s not a flashy player. But he’s effective. And at 26, he’s entering his prime years.
There’s also another piece of the puzzle. United is also in the mix for West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes, a 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder. Fernandes reportedly prefers a move to Old Trafford, though Tottenham is pushing hard. If West Ham’s asking price — which has been described as exorbitant — scares off Spurs, United might be in a strong position to land him. Mitten noted Fernandes would accept a move to Tottenham if they can strike a deal, but his heart is set on United.
So Carrick could end up reshaping his entire midfield in one window. Tchouameni as the anchor. Fernandes as the creator. That’s a very different look from last season’s group.
Nothing is done yet. Mourinho has the final say on Tchouameni. And United still has work to do on the financial side. But the pieces are moving. And for the first time in a while, United is in a position where players actually want to come.
