Manchester United Called Julian Alvarez’s Agent and Now Arsenal Has a Problem

Manchester United have made direct contact with Julian Alvarez’s camp, according to reports out of Spain. And that changes things for Arsenal, who thought they had a clear run at the Atletico Madrid forward.

The 26-year-old Argentine wants out of Atletico. He said as much on ESPN this week. “I don’t think it’s the right moment to talk, but I also don’t want to hide. I try to be an honest person,” Alvarez told the network. “I spoke with the people at the club who I needed to speak with. I think the best thing for everyone is a transfer. I want to fulfil my dream.”

That’s about as direct as a player gets without actually handing in a written transfer request.

Atletico have made their stance clear on a few things. Real Madrid already had a €150 million offer rejected earlier this month. Barcelona have been poking around too, but Atleti aren’t playing that game unless someone triggers his €500 million release clause. That’s not happening. Not for anyone.

So where does that leave Arsenal? Mikel Arteta has been tracking Alvarez for over a year. The Gunners were reportedly considering a move last summer before they went with Viktor Gyokeres instead. Now Arteta is back in the mix, but United have apparently jumped the line by speaking directly with Alvarez’s agent.

A swap deal might be the key

Here’s where it gets interesting for United. AS reports that Atletico have their eye on multiple players at Old Trafford. That opens the door for a part-exchange deal, which could give United an edge Arsenal simply can’t match. The Gunners don’t have the same kind of trade chips sitting in their squad right now.

Alvarez’s time at Manchester City was productive — he won a treble and looked like a world-class second option behind Erling Haaland. But he wanted to be the guy. That’s why he left for Atletico in the first place. Now he wants out of Madrid too, and United might be willing to build their attack around him.

The irony here is tough to miss. United are trying to poach a player Arsenal have been quietly courting for more than a year. If they pull it off, it would be a real statement that the club can still compete for top-tier talent even without Champions League football this season.

Alvarez has not publicly named a preferred destination. But he has made one thing obvious: he’s done in Madrid. The race is open, and United just put their name on the board in a real way.
