Manchester United might be watching another midfield target slip through their fingers. Newcastle United is moving fast on Johan Manzambi, the 20-year-old Freiburg midfielder who turned heads last season in the Bundesliga and at the World Cup.
David Ornstein reports the Magpies are set to open talks with Freiburg this week. They’ve made Manzambi their priority target after losing Sandro Tonali to Tottenham and with Joe Willock entering the final year of his contract. Newcastle is considered the leading contender for the Swiss international, who is reportedly keen on the move.
The Player Everyone Wants
Manzambi broke through at Freiburg last season with 14 goals and assists in the Bundesliga. At 6’0″, he’s got power and pace but also real technical ability. His dribbling and ball-carrying numbers rank among the best in Europe for midfielders. The guy can surge forward, join the attack, and finish. That’s a rare combo.
He showed up in big moments too. Freiburg made the Europa League final, and even though they got hammered 3-0 by Aston Villa, Manzambi was the one player who looked like he belonged on that stage. Then at the World Cup, he scored three goals and set up two more in five games before injuring himself. Switzerland plays Colombia tonight in Vancouver, but he’s out.
Comparisons to Paul Pogba and Jude Bellingham are getting thrown around. It’s not just hype. The toolkit is real. But plenty of players have tools. The question is whether he can put it together consistently at a bigger club.
United’s Midfield Mess
Manchester United has been watching Manzambi for a while. But so have a lot of clubs. The problem for United is they’ve already missed out on Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali this window. Michael Carrick’s midfield needs more dynamism and attacking threat. Right now, neither Kobbie Mainoo nor Manuel Ugarte offers the kind of forward-driving game Manzambi brings.
According to reports, United sees him as a perfect candidate to fix that. And stealing a top target from Newcastle would be a nice bonus. But the Magpies are the ones making the aggressive move right now. They’ve identified Manzambi as the guy to rebuild around in midfield, and they’re not waiting around.
Freiburg hasn’t confirmed anything. The team has not commented publicly on talks. But Ornstein’s reporting is usually pretty solid on these things. If Newcastle gets a deal done this week, United will be left wondering yet again how they let another young talent get away.
The next few days will tell the story. Newcastle is pushing. Manzambi seems interested. And Manchester United is watching from behind, again.
