Chelsea is cooking up some serious changes in the middle of the park, and two of their biggest Premier League rivals might get dragged into the fallout. According to a report from Simon Phillips on Substack, the Blues have their eyes on Bournemouth’s Alex Scott and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton as part of a midfield overhaul that could also involve moving on Andrey Santos and Enzo Fernandez.
Scott is the name generating the most buzz right now. Chelsea has been tracking him all season and sees him as a potential upgrade — or replacement — for Santos, who hasn’t quite locked down a regular spot at Stamford Bridge. But here’s the catch: Bournemouth doesn’t want to sell. They’ve already offered Scott a new contract, and early signals suggest they’re not entertaining offers. Phillips even floated the possibility that Santos could head the other way as part of a deal, though he admitted that was mostly his own speculation.
Meanwhile, Arsenal has also been linked with Scott, so if Chelsea pushes hard for him, this could turn into a genuine transfer tussle between two London clubs. Scott’s ability to play multiple midfield roles makes him a versatile target, and at 22, he fits the profile of a long-term investment both clubs are chasing.
Then there’s the Wharton situation. The Crystal Palace midfielder is high on Chelsea’s list, but a move likely only happens if Enzo Fernandez leaves. That’s a big if. Fernandez has had an uneven time since his big-money move, and while the club isn’t actively shopping him, the door isn’t locked either. If a solid offer comes in — and Man United has been sniffing around for a while — Chelsea might have to make a call. Wharton, still only 21, has shown real composure in the Premier League and would be a different kind of presence than the current options.
Santos, by the way, has been on Manchester United’s radar for a while, and recent reports suggest the interest has gotten more concrete. Fabrizio Romano noted that United has been asking about his situation. The Brazilian is talented but hasn’t forced his way into Chelsea’s plans, so a summer move feels increasingly likely.
If Chelsea pulls this off — swapping out Santos and Fernandez for Scott and Wharton — the midfield looks younger, more energetic, and arguably more balanced. But nothing’s done yet. Bournemouth is playing hardball on Scott. Palace will demand a premium for Wharton. And United could throw a wrench in things by swooping in for Santos. This one might take all summer to sort out.
