Michigan already closed June with a big recruiting win over LSU. But Wednesday? They went ahead and grabbed a four-star cornerback right out from under two Big Ten rivals.

Monsanna Torbert Jr., a 4-star cornerback from the state of Ohio, committed to the Wolverines over Ohio State and Indiana. And he’s not exactly sorry about it.

“I guess I’m the villain now, GO BLUE,” Torbert told Hayes Fawcett of On3/Rivals.

That one stings a little extra for the Buckeyes. Torbert is ranked as Ohio’s No. 3 overall prospect in the Rivals Industry Rankings. Michigan also lands the nation’s 10th-best cornerback in the 2027 class with this pickup.

Why Torbert picked the Wolverines

Torbert explained his decision to Tom Loy of 247Sports after he made it official. And it came down to feel.

“I chose Michigan because, from the moment I stepped in the building, it felt like home,” Torbert said. “It is the people who make the place. All of the staff and recruiting staff had open arms to my family.”

He gave a lot of credit to head coach Kyle Whittingham for sealing the deal. Apparently Whittingham’s family-first approach connected.

“Coach Whittingham is a really big family guy. Having his son and brother on the staff shows how important family is to him. My family is my why,” Torbert said. “Also, I’m excited to play for Coach Whittingham because his game preparation is like no other. He is ready to attack the game like he is playing alongside the players.”

Torbert is now the 20th verbal pledge for Michigan’s 2027 recruiting class. He joins another four-star, Blake Jenkins, in the cornerback room.

For Michigan fans, this one feels like a direct message. You don’t just take a top-three prospect from Ohio. You do it while beating Ohio State head-to-head in the process. And if Torbert keeps that villain energy the whole way? The Wolverines might have something special brewing in their secondary.
