Four-Star QB Flips From Notre Dame to Oklahoma Just Two Weeks Later

Oklahoma football just landed a quarterback commitment that started somewhere else. Trey Tagliaferri, a four-star prospect from New Jersey, announced he’s joining the Sooners. The twist? He had already committed to Notre Dame two weeks ago.

Tagliaferri made his original pledge to the Fighting Irish on a Saturday. Six days later, he backed out. Oklahoma had stayed in contact the whole time, and after a visit to Norman, the 6-foot-3, 195-pound quarterback decided the Sooners were a better fit.

“We just loved the program as a whole,” Tagliaferri told Sooner Scoop. “Everyone seems like a family there, and that’s something I’m looking for. It seems like everyone has great relationships there, and everyone has trust with the coaches. And Coach Kuz, I just loved being around him. The type of guy he is, that’s someone I want to play for.”

Tagliaferri is ranked as the No. 19 quarterback in the country and the No. 10 overall player in New Jersey, per recruiting services. He’s got a live arm and can make all the throws from the pocket. That pocket presence is something Oklahoma’s coaching staff really liked about his game, and it’s why they kept recruiting him even after he committed elsewhere.

His sophomore season numbers back up the hype. Tagliaferri threw for 2,215 yards with 29 touchdowns and just three interceptions, completing 131 of his 211 pass attempts. That’s a 62 percent completion rate and a touchdown-to-interception ratio that catches your attention.

This is part of a bigger picture for Oklahoma. Offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle has been stacking quarterbacks for the future. Bowe Bentley signed on for the 2026 class. Jamison Roberts committed for 2027. And now Tagliaferri is locked in for 2028. That’s three recruiting cycles with a top prospect at quarterback, which gives the Sooners some real stability at the most important position.

Tagliaferri’s flip is also a reminder of how quickly things change in recruiting. Notre Dame thought they had their guy. Two weeks later, he’s wearing a different hat. Oklahoma never stopped pushing, and it paid off.
