Manchester United’s summer window has been a mess so far. If you’re a fan, you already know that. They agreed to a deal for Brazilian midfielder Ederson early on, and then basically nothing else happened. Elliot Anderson went to City. Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali ended up at Tottenham. The midfield rebuild that seemed so urgent in June has stalled out completely.
And then there’s the Crysencio Summerville noise. For a few weeks now, reports have been floating around that United wants the West Ham attacker. Which makes sense. Summerville was one of the few bright spots for a Hammers side that got relegated last season. He’s quick, he’s direct, he’s young enough to develop. And with West Ham heading down to the Championship, he was always going to leave.
But according to Fabrizio Romano, the buzz around United’s interest is overblown. The Italian journalist made it pretty clear this week that there’s not much going on behind the scenes. He said United’s interest in Summerville is nowhere near as advanced as some outlets have suggested. No talks have opened. The club is focused on midfielders first, and Summerville is just a name on a list, not a priority.
Romano also flagged a key complication: Marcus Rashford. If Rashford stays, a move for Summerville gets complicated fast. That’s partly a roster math problem and partly a money problem. Both guys want to play on the left wing. And Rashford’s situation is still up in the air. His permanent move to Barcelona fell through. But recent comments before England’s World Cup match against Mexico suggested he’s still thinking about leaving Old Trafford after the tournament ends.
Other clubs are circling Summerville too. Paris Saint-Germain, Arsenal and Tottenham have all been linked. So even if United eventually decides to pursue him, they’re not going to have a clear runway.
For now, the takeaway is pretty simple. United needs midfielders, and they need them badly. Summerville is a nice player, but he’s not the guy who fixes their biggest problem. And until the team clears some roster space and figures out what Rashford wants to do, this one is probably going to stay a rumor.
