Kylian Mbappé clearly watched what Lionel Messi did earlier today, and he didn’t feel like waiting to respond.
Less than 15 minutes into France’s Group I match against Iraq, the 27-year-old forward picked up a ball just outside the box and curled a beautiful shot into the net. That was his 15th World Cup goal for Les Bleus. And it moved him past Gerd Müller and tied him with Brazilian legend Ronaldo on the all-time list.
Only two players have more: Miroslav Klose with 16 and Lionel Messi with 17.
Messi had put on a show for Argentina earlier in the day, and Mbappé basically said hold my beer. It’s the kind of back-and-forth we’ve gotten used to from these two, even if they’re at very different stages of their careers. Messi is 39 now and playing in what’s likely his final World Cup. Mbappé is just entering his prime and already sitting at 15 goals on football’s biggest stage.
The numbers are getting ridiculous
This isn’t just about the goals though. Mbappé now has 17 goals and assists combined in his last 16 World Cup matches. That’s absurd consistency for a tournament where even the best players can go quiet. He’s been the engine for France since bursting onto the scene as a teenager in 2018, and he hasn’t slowed down.
With Klose and Messi now the only names ahead of him, the question isn’t if Mbappé will catch them. It’s when. And by how many. He’s got at least another decade of World Cup football ahead of him, assuming he stays healthy and France keeps qualifying. The all-time record of 17 doesn’t feel safe. It barely feels in reach of anyone else. But Mbappé? He’s breathing down Messi’s neck.
France needed this too. Group I has been tighter than expected, and getting an early goal against Iraq takes the pressure off. Mbappé delivered when it mattered, same as he always does in these tournaments. Some guys shrink under the spotlight. He seems to play better the brighter it gets.
Whether Mbappé ends his career as the all-time World Cup scorer feels less like a prediction and more like an inevitability at this point. Klose’s record of 16 once felt untouchable. Then Messi came along. Now Mbappé is right there. And he’s got time on his side.
