Francisco Lindor is closing in on a return to the Mets lineup, and it might happen sooner than some fans expected.
The 32-year-old shortstop is scheduled to play another minor league rehab game Tuesday, according to MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo. Lindor has been sidelined since late April with a strained left calf, and the team has been careful not to rush him back. But now it sounds like the end is in sight.
“It’s possible he could be activated after that,” DiComo reported. “It’s also possible he could need a rest day, which would take him to Thursday.”
If he’s cleared after Tuesday’s game, Lindor could rejoin the Mets during their current four-game series against the Chicago Cubs. If the team decides he needs that extra day off, Thursday becomes the target. Either way, the shortstop looks like he’ll be back by the time the Mets face the Philadelphia Phillies in their next series.
The Mets have been without their star shortstop for about six weeks. Lindor has only played in 24 games this season. In 93 at-bats, he has 21 hits, two home runs and five RBIs, with a .226 batting average and a .314 on-base percentage. Those numbers aren’t vintage Lindor, but the team is clearly better with him in the lineup.
While Lindor has been out, the Mets have leaned on Bo Bichette at shortstop. Zack Short has also seen some time there. The lineup has held together okay, but there’s no replacement for a five-time All-Star and Gold Glove defender up the middle.
The Mets are 31-29 heading into Tuesday’s game. They’ve stayed competitive in the NL East despite the injuries, but getting Lindor back should give the offense a jolt. He’s a guy who can change a game with one swing or one diving stop. The team has been waiting for that spark.
The timing works out well. The Mets are in the middle of a homestand and will face the Phillies this weekend. That series could have real division implications. Having Lindor back for that one would be a big deal.
For now, the plan is simple. Play Tuesday. See how the calf feels. Then make the call. The Mets are close to getting their guy back.
