Mason Greenwood is headed to Turkey. The former Manchester United forward has agreed to join Fenerbahce in a deal worth €42 million, according to Foot Mercato, snubbing richer offers from Saudi Arabia and Spain in the process.
The package breaks down to €40 million guaranteed plus €2 million in add-ons. That would make Greenwood the most expensive sale in Marseille history, topping Michy Batshuayi’s €39 million move to Chelsea back in 2016.
Marseille had higher financial proposals on the table. Atletico Madrid came calling. Al-Ahli from the Saudi Pro League offered more money. But Greenwood wanted the Turkish Super Lig instead. Fenerbahce is also prepared to pay him around €10 million per year in salary.
Why Marseille Sold Now
Greenwood still had three years left on his contract at Marseille. But the club is in cost-cutting mode. They needed the cash. So despite his production — 48 goals and 17 assists in 81 competitive appearances over two seasons — they moved him this summer rather than later.
Ismail Kartal is reshaping Fenerbahce’s roster in a big way. Greenwood slots in alongside Nathan Ake and Vedat Muriqi as part of that overhaul. The pressure is immediate. Galatasaray has won the league four seasons running. Fenerbahce hasn’t finished on top since 2023. The fans are restless.
What Greenwood Brings
He’s versatile across the front line, comfortable cutting in from the right or playing through the middle. At Marseille, he was the guy defenses had to game-plan for. That won’t change in Istanbul. But the league is different. More physical. More chaotic. Less structured than Ligue 1. Some players thrive in that environment. Some don’t.
The deal isn’t officially announced yet. Marseille hasn’t confirmed anything. But the framework is there. Four-year contract. Club-record fee. A player who was once viewed as United’s future now settling into his third club in three countries.
Greenwood is 24. He’s already played in England, France, and now Turkey. The path hasn’t been straight. But the numbers keep coming.
