Spain Gave Lamine Yamal a World Cup Final Ticket for His 19th Birthday

France knew what they were walking into. Spain under Luis de la Fuente had been unbeaten in 13 straight matches across World Cups and Euros. And on the night Lamine Yamal turned 19, La Roja punched their ticket to the World Cup final with a calm, clinical 2-0 win.

The kid had a quiet tournament by his own ridiculous standards. One goal. But against France he woke up. Yamal spent the first half making Lucas Digne look like a guy who just found out he’s heading to PSG next season. He cooked him on the right wing over and over. He drew the penalty that Mikel Oyarzabal buried in the 22nd minute. Then Dani Olmeo pulled off a nasty little flick in the 54th minute to set up Pedro Porro for the second and that was basically that.

Spain’s defense refused to break

France has all these attackers. Kylian Mbappe. Ousmane Dembele. Bradley Barcola. But Spain’s backline treated every blocked shot and cleared ball like they’d just scored. They celebrated tackles with real heat. Full commitment. No panic.

Michael Olise had a rough night. Languid is the kindest word for it. France couldn’t find any rhythm until the game was basically over. Barcola had a couple half-chances early but Spain’s midfield duo of Rodri and Dani Olmeo controlled the tempo so completely that France’s attackers spent most of the night chasing shadows.

Yamal got a late birthday present from his team

Nineteen years old and heading to a World Cup final. The Barcelona kid didn’t just win the penalty early. He kept beating Digne, kept drawing fouls, kept forcing France to shift their entire defensive shape toward him. That opened up space for everyone else.

Nico Williams got some run late in the match too. Spain’s depth is real. They’ve played with composure the entire tournament. No stage has looked too big for this squad. They move the ball, they defend hard, they trust each other. It’s boringly effective.

Spain now waits for either Argentina or England in the final. Two very different opponents. But Luis de la Fuente’s team has shown they don’t really care who shows up. They’ll just play their game and see if anyone can stop them.
